Sharing Circles

Mother Haven offers sharing circles for mothers and a place where mothers can share their feelings in a nonjudgmental, listening, and respectful environment. Each week there will be a topic discussion related to new mothers and motherhood in general. Mother’s will have an opportunity to share their experiences in a small group environment.

The major premise behind the sharing circles is to allow the mothers to speak. The 90 minutes is structured so that you will have ample time to share your story and listen to other mothers as well. At the end of the sharing circle you will not only have explored how motherhood has impacted you, you will have made lasting connections with other mothers.

Take a look at the Sharing Circles page for more information.

Birth & Postpartum Doula Support

Mother Haven offers birth and postpartum support to families. Doula is a Greek word meaning “woman who serves”. The birth doula provides a woman and her partner continuous emotional and physical support during labour and birth and the immediate postpartum period. The postpartum doula provides information and support to new families immediately following the birth of a baby. Having a baby can be overwhelming. The doula’s role is to help ease the transition while supporting parents in their new role.

Celebrations of Motherhood

Becoming a mother is one of life’s greatest transitions. Whether you are a mother to be or you have just birthed your baby, this is a very special time. It is joyful and it is challenging. It is a time of change and a time to celebrate.

In many cultures around the world women are cared for and pampered in the first days and weeks postpartum. Along with the support for the new mom, there are often rites of passage and healing ceremonies. Dr. Laurence Kruckman, an anthropologist who studied postpartum traditions in diverse cultures calls this the “cushioning effect.” And it is these types of support, rituals, and ceremonies that help ease a new mother’s adjustment through this transitional time in her life.

Mother Haven believes every mother deserves to be celebrated. Whether you are an expectant mother or you have already birthed your child, Mother Haven will work with your support circle to create a ceremony to mark this rite of passage. Each ceremony will be unique to the individual mother. Mother Haven believes in honouring and celebrating each mother as she crosses over this major life transition.

Preparing for Parenthood

(the driver’s ed class for expectant parents)

Parents are not always prepared for the journey they are about to embark on. Even though they may have taken a prenatal course and have read numerous books, bought the crib, change table, diapers and diaper bag and the nursery is perfectly designed, many parents forget about an integral part of the process of becoming parents-what happens when the baby arrives?

Mother Haven strives to educate parents on what life is like after the baby arrives, beyond stocking up on supplies and changing diapers. Along with information on newborn care and characteristics, sleeping, and breastfeeding, we will discuss the adjustment period after the baby arrives, support systems, and how to live your bliss with a baby. After these sessions you will be more informed and will have increased confidence in your role as a parent. These are private educational sessions offered to the expectant parents.
