Janelle is a passionate mother to two beautiful girls ages 9 and 7. She has a love for adventure, travelling, and the mountains. She believes in the importance of building a strong sense of self and the strength that comes from having connections with other women. One of her “callings” in life is to support, educate, and empower women, and she is particularly dedicated to mothers. This passion has been reflected in her many years of healing work with women and families.
After graduating from the University of Alberta, she began working at Lurana Shelter for women fleeing abuse in their homes. This was a pivotal moment in her life, one that would shape her work to present day. Since leaving Lurana Shelter, she has supported many women and families. She was a Child Welfare Worker to those with challenging life circumstances, an Outreach Worker to young mothers at Terra Centre, and the Coordinator of the Violence Prevention Program at the Banff YWCA.
Combining both her passion for the outdoors and creating places for women to connect, Janelle developed a program for young mothers to venture into the mountains on multiday backpacking trips in Banff National Park. Over three consecutive summers she introduced the young women to hiking in the backcountry. She facilitated daily sharing circles that created a powerful space where women could share and connect with each other and themselves.
Her most recent work has been with mothers. Over ten years ago, Janelle first supported a birth and the incredible experience led her to complete the DONA birth and postpartum doula training and she is now a certified postpartum doula. Janelle is a welcome support to women both before and after their journey to motherhood.
Often women are not supported enough during one of life’s major transitions: giving birth and becoming a mother. Once the baby arrives, the emphasis is shifted from the mother to the new baby. Janelle believes mothers need just as much nurturing, support, and learning opportunities as their babies and children.
And hence Mother Haven was born. To provide a place where mothers can feel supported as individuals, nurtured as women, and educated in their journey through motherhood.
Welcome to Mother Haven.
